Since I’ve decided to go into making a webcomic, one thing was certain - I needed to read some. I’d only read manga at this point, and while that’s a good reference, it’s not the same as a webcomic. I needed to figure out the difference in layout, how most looked, etc. I think the only webcomic I’d read was Hooky, when it got a physical release at Barnes and Noble (Which is VERY good I definitely recommend it). So I’ll dive into what Webcomics I’m reading now, and my reviews!
#1 - Marionetta by Miriam Bonastre Tur
This series is a Webtoon Original, and currently only has one season of 46 episodes. This author also created Hooky, so I knew It was worth checking out. Marionetta is about two girls who essentially get trapped in a circus, where not everything is what it seems. It’s got beautiful character design, great story, amazing art, and questions that need answering. I think I binge-read it over the course of a week, I couldn’t stop.
#2 - Lackadaisy by Tracy J. Butler
This series is on Webtoon Canvas, but has also got an independently animated pilot episode! The pilot and the comic are awesome. The art is beautiful. The story is set in the 1920’s, where everyone are cats, Aristocats kinda style! I feel like that speaks for itself. These cats are trying to keep their beloved bootleg business alive.
#3 - Ramshackle by Zeddyzi
This one is also an indie-animated pilot! I laughed out loud at the pilot multiple times. The webcomic, though on hiatus due to creation of the pilot, is also quite enjoyable! Join a couple of street urchin kids in wacky adventures! This one is also on Webtoon Canvas.
#4 - Funtime Phobia By Strawberry Circus
On Webtoon Canvas, (and possibly Tapas, I’m not sure) Funtime Phobia is a comedy set in a world where people represent different fears! They take children to scare, then consume their fear and send them home, except nothing seems to scare the new girl Raylee. A clown named Chip is determined to scare her. The art style is super cute. Trigger warning for signs of abuse.
#5 - Sombulus by TheDelphina
This can be read on Webtoon Canvas, but it’s wayyy more caught up on the official Sombulus website. It’s a fun story about fantastical characters going on various adventures through the different worlds of Sombulus. A fun action-packed read!
Those are my five webcomic spotlights for now! Hope you check them out!
Webcomic Updates:
So, as I said in my last post, I’ve had to pause the storyboarding process due to a complete revision of the first chapter. Good news: The revisions are done (mostly)! So storyboarding should begin again soon (though I’ll have to scrap the original work I did on the first storyboards, sigh). This is why I must wait until my scripts are ready before I start drawing.
Great article and reviews. You are really going places! Thank you
Great list, thanks for sharing!
